Sutton beats Plato in tight Brands Hatch BTCC qualifying

Saturday, April 06 2019

Ashley Sutton will start the opening round of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch from pole position tomorrow (Sunday) in his Subaru Levorg after edging out former team mate Jason Plato in a close session.

Sutton made his charge in the latter part of the 30-minute session in tricky conditions which caught out Ollie Jackson, Sam Tordoff, and Mark Blundell. The works Subaru driver's time of 53.602s was enough to secure him pole position by a tenth-of-a-second.

Plato's second place puts him in a great position to begin his Vauxhall return in resounding style, as he heads into this season chasing the 100-win mark.

The second row will belong exclusively to Team BMW's new 3 Series, with Turkington third ahead of Andrew Jordan in the BMW Pirtek Racing liveried 330i M Sport. Long-time session leader Tom Oliphant will complete the top-five to complete his career best BTCC qualifying.

The works Hondas will sit just behind the BMW trio, with series legend Matt Neal narrowly outqualifying Dan Cammish by just six-thousandths-of-a-second!

Toyota returned to the BTCC in an official capacity with a solid eighth place for Tom Ingram in the Corolla. Ingram could be one to watch in the races tomorrow, after winning at the same venue in each of the past three seasons.

The top-ten was completed by the independently entered Honda Civic Type-Rs of Sam Tordoff and Josh Cook.

The BTCC kicks off at Brands Hatch with three races on the world-famous Indy circuit on Sunday 7 April. Tickets for Sunday are £35 on the gate with FREE entry fo under-13s.
