Simmons seals British F3 race three success at Silverstone

Sunday, June 27 2021

Chris Dittmann Racing's Ayrton Simmons salvaged victory from a difficult weekend in the final BRDC British F3 race at Silverstone.

The British driver started fourth on the grid and led for the majority of the race holding off Alex Connor and Roberto Faria, with the trio covered by half a second at the flag.

Pole sitter Reema Juffali had her best race in the series so far to claim fourth, with Elite Motorsport pair Jose Garfias and Tom Lebbon completing the top-six.

Juffali made a good start to hold onto her lead on the run to Copse, but Marzorati got a good run on the Douglas driver and squeezed past with a brave move up the inside heading into the Maggots/Becketts complex. Behind there was chaos as Elite's Javier Sagrera spun at the same location, with the field somehow avoiding the Spanish driver, who retired to the pits.

Marzorati led across the line by just two tenths from teammate Simmons, who forced his way past at Brooklands on lap two. That brought Carlin's Aron into play, but he clipped Marzorati's rear wheel at the exit of Luffield. Aron lost his front wing and had to pit, while Marzorati retired with a puncture.

That allowed Connor to climb to second having started seventh, with Juffali and Faria promoted up the order too.

But further drama followed on lap three, as Hitech's Bart Horsten collided with Fortec's Mikkel Grundtvig at Brooklands, which after a slight delay, necessitated a safety car.

The race resumed at the start of lap eight, but the time had been ticking down, leaving Simmons with just two laps to maintain his advantage. The Briton made a great restart to build a gap of over six tenths as the race resumed, and while Connor was able to lap a couple of tenths quicker, Simmons had him covered to claim his second win of the season by just under three tenths of a second.

Faria contended with damage to his car to collect his second podium of the day having started 10th on the grid, the Brazilian passing Juffali on lap four to seal third place.

Behind the top-six, Frederick Lubin secured seventh for Arden, with the midfield being action packed once more, with Sebastian Alvarez eighth for Hitech GP.

Championship contenders Zak O'Sullivan (Carlin) and Reece Ushijima (Hitech) were also in the thick of the action, with the Japanese driver, a double winner this weekend, running as high as seventh before the safety car, before being shuffled down the order to tenth in the final two laps.

Carlin pair Christian Mansell and Aron were the final finishers in a typically dramatic reverse grid affair.
