Roberto Moreno set for Formula Ford Festival comeback

Thursday, October 14 2021

1980 Formula Ford Festival winner Roberto Moreno will return to the famous Brands Hatch event this autumn (30/31 October), as reported by Formula Scout.

The Brazilian raced in Formula 1 one and off throughout the 1980s and '90s, acheiving a best result of second in the 1990 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka whilst driving for Benetton.

Moreno then swritched his focus to IndyCar racing in North America, where he was a frequent presence on the grid throughout the CART/Champ Car era of the 1990s and early 2000s. Moreno was twice a winner in CART, and raced in the IndyCar Series as recently as 2008 when he made a one-off appearance at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.

After moving to the UK and making his first Formula Ford appearances in 1979, Moreno progressed to Ralph Firman's works Van Dieman team in 1980. It was behind the wheel of a Van Diemen RF80 that Moreno won the British Championship that season in addition to the Formula Ford Festival.

Moreno will once again take to the cockpit of an RF80 at this year's event, driving a car run by Jonathan Lewis and his Snetterton Speed Shop team.

After winning the Festival, Moreno progressed to British Formula 3, and later raced at Brands Hatch again in European Formula 2 and International Formula 3000, winning the latter outright in 1988. Moreno also raced at Brands Hatch in 2003, whilst contesting his final full season of the Champ Car World Series.

As per Formula Scout's story, the Festival is expected to welcome a significant entry this year. The BRSCC has confirmed that 96 entrants of a maximum possible 108 have registered, as the event aims to welcome more than 100 cars for the first time since 1993.

Other confirmed entries include Team USA scholars, 2016 winner Niall Murray and W Series race-winner Megan Gilkes.

Tickets for the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch on 30/31 October are available in advance from £14 with free entry for under-13s. For more information, please call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
