GTWCE Qualifying: Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG fastest at Brands

Saturday, April 30 2022

Machinery from Ferrari and Mercedes-AMG shared the qualifying spoils on the full Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, as Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe, powered by AWS returned to the Kent venue this afternoon (Saturday).

Pole position in the first qualifying segment went to Ulysse de Pauw in the AF Corse Ferrari 488 he shares with Pierre Alexandre Jean. The Belgian lapped rapidly throughout the initial qualifying period before ending up with an effort of 1m27.770s, which was enough to see off the opposition by just 0.034s.

Super-fast pro driver Jules Gounon was second quickest in the first of the AKKODIS ASP Mercedes-AMGs which dominated practice this morning, with Mattia Druidi completing the top three in the Audi R8 he co-drives with Luca Ghiotto for Tresor by Car Collection.

There was very familiar name at the top of the table in the second part of qualifying, where Raffaele Marciello secured pole with a blistering time of 1m21.370s. It was no surprise to see the AKKODIS ASP ace, who has always gone well at Brands Hatch, to feature at the sharp end, and he sealed top spot despite a dramatic off-track moment at Paddock Hill Bend.

Patric Niederhauser was second fastest behind Marciello, lapping the full Grand Prix circuit just 0.073s adrift. Niederhauser was the leading Audi for the Sainteloc Junior Team, where he is teamed up alongside Aurelien Panis. Reigning Sprint Cup champions Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts will start third for race two, following Vanthoor's efforts in the latter session - the best performance by any WRT Audi in today's qualifying.

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi will have to fight through the pack if he wants to challenge towards the podium positions tomorrow. The Italian will start the car 17th for his first ever Sprint Cup contest tomorrow, whilst his co-pilot Frederic Vervisch was 11th fastest in the second session.

Two races on Sunday will headline the event, with a bumper crowd expected to attend. Tickets will be available on the gate.
