Granfors glides to maiden GB3 victory at Silverstone

Saturday, May 07 2022

Fortec Motorsport's Joel Granfors claimed his first win in the GB3 Championship, after a commanding drive in the first race of the weekend.

Granfors led the pack away from pole and then built a strong lead on the first lap, establishing a cushion that proved vital for the remainder of the race.

Hitech's Luke Browning fought past Tom Lebbon on the first lap and then was able to make small inroads into Granfors' advantage, but ultimately just fell short and had to settle for second after getting close on the final lap, while Lebbon took his first podium of the year in third for Elite Motorsport.

Max Esterson challenged Lebbon at times too, but ultimately claimed his best result of the season for Douglas Motorsport in fourth place.

Esterson finished just half a second clear of Elite's James Hedley after an entertaining battle, while his teammate John Bennett maintained his run of top-10 results so far by taking sixth place.

Bennett finished sixth having started eighth and was three quarters of a second ahead of Carlin's Roberto Faria.

Chris Dittmann Racing's Branden Oxley was eighth, making strong progress on the first lap from his 12th place starting position, and was engaged in a race-long scrap with teammate McKenzy Cresswell, who started and finished ninth. Callum Voisin completed the top-10 for Carlin.

Granfors pumped in an excellent first lap to lead the pack by almost two seconds at the end of the first tour. He was helped by plenty of squabbling behind him, as Browning fought hard to pass Lebbon.

Browning made that move stick with a move at Vale, but then had to fight hard to close up on Granfors. A string of fastest laps helped, and though he had him well within his sights, a slide at Club on the last tour cost a bit of momentum, and Granfors held on to win by less than three quarters of a second.

The second GB3 race of the weekend is due to commence at 10.35 tomorrow (Sunday) morning.
