Chadwick takes W Series pole as Brits lock out top three

Sunday, August 11 2019

W Series championship leader Jamie Chadwick claimed pole position for the series finale on Brands Hatch #SuperSunday, with a stunning late effort enough to deny fellow Brit Alice Powell pole position just as the chequered flag fell on a frenetic qualifying period on the full Grand Prix circuit.

Throughout the first half of the session, it appeared that practice pace-setter Emma Kimilainen had the edge over her rivals as she comfortably topped the times. As the session entered its middle phases, however, Powell emerged as a genuine pole position threat, deposing the Finn from the top of the standings.

At that stage, Chadwick sat just sixth in the standings as Kimilainen and Powell duked it out at the top, trading fastest sector times lap after lap. Undettered, the championship favourite inched her way up the order, first to fourth, and then the top three as the session entered its final stages.

With just minutes left on the clock, Chadwick began to ramp up her pace and she topped the session for the first time with just four minutes remaining on the clock. Powell regained the top spot with just one minute left to run, but Chadwick stormed round the Kent circuit once more as the chequered flag fell to secure her third pole of the season by just over three tenths of a second.

Powell hung on to third, whilst local racer Esmee Hawkey secured third on the grid. The Chislehurst racer picked up her best W Series qualifying result to date as she challenges for a place on next year's grid.

Kimilainen who seemed for so long to be the benchmark ended up fourth after running wide on her final attempt, whilst Chadwick's title rival Visser will start fifth after improving upon her results from Saturday practice.

The other two British drivers, Sarah Moore and Jessica Hawkins, will line up eighth and ninth respectively on home soil for this afternoon's race.
