Day and Soerensen win on thrilling SpeedFest Saturday

Saturday, June 01 2019

Alon Day and Lasse Soerensen shared the NASCAR Whelen Series (NWES) spoils on a scorching opening day of American SpeedFest 7 on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit this afternoon (Saturday).

Israel's Day, who has previously won at Brands Hatch on a number of occasions, claimed victory in the opening NWES race for the Elite 1 professional drivers with a calculated performance after starting third on the grid.

Day spent the opening stages of the race in line behind race leader Stienes Longin and Loris Hezemans before the latter started to suffer with his car's performance and dropped away. This allowed Day to chase down long-time leader Longin and pounce for the win after a side-by-side manoeuver on the Brabham Straight.

Longin held on to secure second position, whilst Nicolo Rocca rose to claim the final position on the podium, just ahead of 1991 Formula Ford Festival winner Marc Goosens and Lucas Lasserre.

Ant Whorton-Eales was the leading Brit in the Elite 1 race, with his eighth place placing him just ahead of Hezemans who faded in the latter part of the race. 1997 F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve ended up 15th after suffering from a fuel issue late on.

Long-time leader Florian Venturi was to suffer heartbreak as his car spluttered to a reduced pace as the final lap began, handing Soerensen the position whilst he cruised home to fourth place.
