Brands Hatch to host ‘most powerful’ DTM season in 2019

Wednesday, January 16 2019

The DTM will be more powerful than ever before when it returns to Brands Hatch on 10-11 August, following the adoption of its new technical regulations, including the introduction of turbocharged engines for 2019.

In addition to this year's all-new four-cylinder, direct-injection two-litre turbo engines, a number of other features have been tweaked in the German-based touring car championship.

A planned reduction in downforce will be aided by the introduction of a new rear wing and Drag Reduction System (DRS) to increase overtaking. Another trick available to drivers this year will be a 'Push-to-Pass' system which will grant them a further, temporary increase in power.

The DRS rules have been changed for this year to enable more frequent use during the last five laps of a race as drivers attempt to close down the gaps ahead. The 'Push-to-Pass' system will allow each driver to enjoy a 30bhp horsepower boost up to 12 times throughout a race.

In addition to all that, the DTM's new regulations will improve the cars' power-to-weight ratios, making them the most potent in the championship's history.

"These additions are the perfect ingredients for spectacular overtaking - and that makes for thrilling racing," said Achim Kostron, Managing Director of DTM's umbrella organisation ITR GmbH. "Thanks to the significantly reduced performance weight and the new aero package, the skill and courage of the drivers will really be placed under the spotlight: out on the racetrack."

In addition to these changes, this year's DTM cars will sport bigger front inlets and larger bonnet outlets, making them look meaner and more aggressive than their predecessors.
