Frijns to the top in opening DTM practice at Brands Hatch

Saturday, August 10 2019

Audi's Robin Frijns topped the opening DTM session of the weekend on the full Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, making the most of the early running to set a fastest time of 1m16.318s before a late shower slowed the field down in the second half of the session.

Frijns was just a tenth of a second faster than fellow Audi driver Loic Duval, with two-time series champion Marco Wittmann leading the BMW charge in third, one place ahead of another BMW of former F1 driver Timo Glock. Nico Muller completed the top five in a strong session for Audi.

Mike Rockenfeller could be a man to watch this weekend on the back of his return to the podium last time out at the TT Circuit Assen. The Audi driver is a former winner on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit too.

This session marked the debut of Aston Martin on home soil in the DTM, and it was Daniel Juncadella who led the British manufacturer's effort to go ninth, 12 months after he claimed a maiden series victory at the same venue.

Championship leader Rene Rast was only able to set the 13th fastest time of the session, but his form thus far in 2019 indicates we can expect to see him further up the order as the weekend progresses.

Paul di Resta fared the best of the three Brits on the grid in 11th, one place ahead of his R-Motorsport Aston Martin stablemate and fellow British ace Jake Dennis. Jamie Green was down in 17th by the session's end, but was towards the top of the timings early on before the rain fell.
