Dixon does the double at Oulton Park thriller

Sunday, September 16 2018

The opening round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship Showdown at Oulton Park proved to be Jake Dixon's weekend, with a new lap record and pole position in qualifying on Saturday followed by back-to-back race wins today (Sunday), edging him closer to Leon Haslam at the top of the points table.

But Haslam showed his experience and determination, working his way up from last on the grid to third in a rain-soaked race one. Technical problems in qualifying put him at the back in 24th but he steadily cut through the pack to add to his tally, and picked up more points with a second in the glorious sunshine of race two.

Tommy Bridewell completed the top three in both races, with a second in race one and a third in race two. "It's crazy really, you can't believe it's the same day. I had confidence in the team and myself, we had pace wet and dry, and it's lovely to back it up in both conditions.

"The bike was working absolutely spot on. These two guys have just got a bit more momentum on me at the minute and you know there's a bit more at stake for them so they'd got to ride a bit harder."

Dixon, who now trails Haslam by 31 points, said: "What an awesome weekend by having pole, the fastest ever lap round here and two fantastic wins. It's been some weekend and I am absolutely buzzing. I can't thank my team enough to provide me a bike that in every condition it's just awesome so it's been so good all weekend, we've been chipping away, we've been chipping away all year and it just seems to be getting better and better and just can't wait for Assen."
