Irwin takes first-ever pole at 'Big Brands Bash'

Saturday, July 21 2018

Glenn Irwin topped the timings in today's Bennetts British Superbike Championship qualifying at Brands Hatch to take his first-ever BSB pole position. He'll be joined at the front of the grid tomorrow by Josh Brookes and Jake Dixon.

All three agreed that today's warm and sticky conditions made qualifying tough, and at one point Irwin said he didn't think he could maintain the momentum he'd built up in yesterday's practice sessions.

"I really, really struggled earlier and I thought 'was yesterday just one of those days I clicked and today isn't?'. But we went back to what we knew, back to exactly how we rolled out yesterday morning and fine-tuned it," he said.

Irwin praised the team in his garage and said his bike was "faultless" in this afternoon's qualifying - a session which saw brother and Be Wiser Ducati teammate Andrew crash out at Paddock. Glenn came to his rescue and gave him a pillion ride back to the pits, much to the amusement of the crowd.

Tomorrow's Bennetts BSB racing starts with warm-up at 9.25am, with race one at 1.30pm and race two at 4.30pm, plus top-class support action and heaps of off-track entertainment. To mark the 20th anniversary of the legendary Yamaha YZF-R1, celebrity riders past and present will be in attendance and R1 owners will take part in a track parade on Sunday.

Gate entry tomorrow (Sunday) is £34 for adults, £20 for 13-15 year olds, £26 for senior citizens and children under 13 are free. For full details click here.
