Double-take for Brookes, Irwin and Haslam at ‘Big Brands Bash’

Sunday, July 22 2018

Today's two Bennetts British Superbike Championship clashes at Brands Hatch produced carbon copy 1-2-3 finishes, with Josh Brookes recording a double win, Glenn Irwin scoring two second places and Leon Haslam registering two thirds to boost his position at the top of the points table.

Brookes' double win had added relevance for his McAms Yamaha team because the weekend was dedicated to a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Yamaha YZF-R1 and his bike was emblazoned with the original livery. It also means the Australian will finally shave off the handlebar moustache he's been sporting - he promised it would go if he scored the double.

The hot and sticky conditions made racing difficult throughout the weekend, but race two saw the riders pick up the pace and Irwin pushed Brookes all the way to the line.

"We were pushing fast lap times all the way through. When you are doing that something's got to be getting worn, either you or the tyre or both, so last two even maybe three laps I was like 'oh I'm in trouble here', I didn't have the drive I needed to continue that pace. But fortunately having that tiny gap that I had was enough to keep it right. I came into the last turn and I could hear the thump of the Ducatti right behind me and I wasn't ready to give it up after leading the whole way.

"It's a fantastic timing to get the double for Yamaha on the 20th anniversary livery bike. It's a perfect gift for them and it was their birthday a couple of weeks ago so I'm sure it goes down well for the brand and for the team," said Brookes.

And talking about his now-famous moustache, he added: "I'm a man of my word, I said if I did the double I would shave it off so it'll be off before the next race."

Brookes was crowned Monster Energy 'King of Brands' following his double win and received his trophy from MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer on the Brands Hatch podium.

A gripping weekend of Bennetts BSB and support racing was accompanied by some fantastic off-track entertainment including high-energy fun at the Monster Energy rig, a live music concert on the campsite stage on Saturday night and bike displays from Yamaha and the Ducatti Owners Club.

The championship travels to Thruxton on 3-5 August before roaring into Cadwell Park on 17-19 August for the annual 'Party in the Park'. Advance online adult tickets are £37 with reductions for teens and kids under 13 go free. For full details and to buy click here.
