Haslam masters conditions to win second BSB race at Brands

Sunday, April 15 2018

'Pocket Rocket' Leon Haslam won the rain-interrupted second Bennetts British Superbike Championship race of the weekend to close the gap on Bradley Ray and Shane 'Shakey' Byrne at the top of the table.

Ray and Byrne started the race 1-2 on the grid, but a shower called proceedings to a halt on lap eight and the re-start saw Ray, Haslam and Jake Dixon on the front line. With 22 laps still to race, riders constantly jostled for position on the wet track in a nail-biting contest.

Richard Cooper and Dixon fell foul of the conditions and crashed out, and the final front four - Haslam, Byrne, Glenn Irwin and Michael Laverty repeatedly switched as the end drew nearer. But it was Haslam who held out to take the race - helping to erase memories of his last outing at Brands Hatch when he lost the 2017 title to Byrne.

"It was one of those races that you kind-of never wanted to end so it was so much fun and I had a real good battle with these guys and to make it pay off on that last lap, sometimes it doesn't work out in your favour," he said afterwards.

Ray - a rookie last season - finished seventh and leads the championship from Byrne by 10 points, with Haslam just four points behind.
