Jack Goff claims first BTCC pole of 2018 at Brands Hatch

Saturday, April 07 2018

Jack Goff will start from pole position when the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship kicks off at Brands Hatch tomorrow (Sunday). The WIX Racing with Eurotech driver topped the table by just under a tenth of a second from Sam Tordoff on a blustery afternoon at the Kent circuit.

Goff's result is a repeat for the team, which claimed pole position with Jeff Smith this time last year, and continues a hot streak which has seen the driver claim three qualifying pole positions in a row. Goff is the first person to achieve such a streak in the ultra-competitive BTCC since Mat Jackson in 2016.

Goff will share the front row with Team GardX Racing with Motorbase's Sam Tordoff who was impressive on his return to the championship after a year away in the GT racing.

The Team BMW trio of Rob Collard, Colin Turkington, and Andrew Jordan led the early proceedings, before BTCC debutant Dan Cammish began to light up the timing screens with a sequence of fast laps. Halfords Yuasa Racing's new star very nearly claimed pole position at the first time of asking when he became the first man to lap beneath the 48s barrier.

Unfortunately for Cammish, he was adjudged to be guilty of a pit lane infringement, which resulted in some of his times being deleted. After dropping right of the back of the pack, he eventually recovered to post a fourth placed finish, behind Goff, Tordoff, and Turkington.

Jordan's best effort was enough to put him fifth on the grid, ahead of Matt Neal in the second Halfords Yuasa car, and Tom Chilton's Ford Focus RS.

Matt Simpson qualified eighth after an impressive start to his first race weekend as a Eurotech driver. Simpson was competitive in both practice sessions, and followed it up with another strong showing in qualifying. Tom Ingram was ninth, with Brett Smith completing the top-ten in the final Eurotech Civic.

Reigning champion Ashley Sutton has ground to make up in his Subaru Levorg GT after qualifying 18th, whilst championship legend Jason Plato qualified 29th in the sister car.
