Monday, April 25 2016

A colossal grid of 37 supercars will contest two Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup races on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit this May (7/8), with the world's best GT drivers representing the planet's finest manufacturers.

The Blancpain Sprint grid represents a substantial increase on last year's event, with many new teams and drivers joining the established runners. All will be aiming to beat crack team WRT, which has switched to the brand new R8, fielding five of the 11 Audis on the list. Reigning champion Robin Frijns has split with team-mate Laurens Vanthoor, joining the Belgian's younger brother Dries, whilst the older Vanthoor began his new partnership with compatriot Frederic Vervisch in winning style at the opening round in Misano earlier this month. Other R8 drivers include ex-F1 driver Markus Winkelhock, and former Porsche Carrera GB Champion Michael Meadows.

Germany is also represented by BMW, and there are three of the new M6 coupés in the field, one of which will be driven by Alexander Sims, who won the British GT race here last August. Rivals Mercedes are also included, with seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s, and drivers include DTM legend Bernd Schneider, and reigning FIA European F3 Champion Felix Rosenqvist. The grid also features a Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Italy's rich supercar heritage is well-represented with four Ferraris, with a new 488 lining up alongside three 458 Italias. Modenese rivals Lamborghini's six cars include former GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi, former FIA F2 champion Mirko Bortolotti, and Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen, who won both races here in 2014.

Four cars will defend British honour, and these include a brace of factory-backed McLaren 650 S cars. Drivers include Britons Rob Bell and Craig Dolby, who both starred in last year's race. British former BTCC racer Steven Kane is amongst four Bentley Team M-Sport-entered Continental drivers, and the list also includes inaugural FIA F2 champion Andy Soucek.

Also included in the bumper field is a brace of works Nissan GT-Rs, with British drivers Alex Buncombe and Sean Walkinshaw both expected to star on home turf this May. They complete a grid of 37 supercars, and the sight and sound of the field taking on the legendary Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is set to be the highlight of the season.
