Brands Hatch set for thrilling HSCC Superprix Sunday

Sunday, July 13 2014

Brands Hatch is set for another superb day of HSCC Superprix action today (Sunday) with plenty of drama expected in a plethora of historic single-seater, tin top and sports car contests. Today's racing line-up includes several classes that didn't compete yesterday.

The packed Derek Bell Trophy grid for historic F5000 and F2 cars is certain to be one of the day's highlights, as it features a number of high-profile names within its ranks. Ex-Grand Prix driver Ian Ashely, and seasoned pro Ian Flux both start in the top ten in the first of two races for the category. Other notable entrants include the current Historic F1 champion Greg Thornton and regular race-winner Michael Lyons, who starts from pole position.

One of the most hotly anticipated contests of the day will be for the Lotus Cortinas and Hillman Imps in the Historic Touring Cars. These machines are typically some of the most exciting to watch, particularly as they tackle Paddock Hill Bend sideways!

There will also be contests for two different forms of Formula Ford racing, at the category's spiritual home. Historic Formula Ford 1600 is home to the wingless open-wheel machines with which the Formula Ford name has become so closely associated, whilst Formula Ford 2000 is its slicks-and-wings cousin. Ex-Formula 1 driver and television personality Tiff Needell will be amongst those enjoying the Historic Formula Ford 1600 slipstreaming battles.

Further low-downforce single-seater action will be provided by the Historic Formula Juniors, recalling the early years of junior-level formula cars.

Yesterday's Historic Formula Three contests will be followed up by Classic Formula Three races for later machines with more advanced aerodynamics. The cars racing today were originally raced during the 1971-84 period, in which triple F1 World Champions Ayrton Senna and Nelson Piquet both graduated from the category.

The Historic Formula 2 cars, Martini Trophy sports-prototypes, and Super Tourers all return, following thrilling contests yesterday to complete a fantastic programme.

Track action commences at 10:00 with Historic Formula Ford, which is also the first race of the day at 12:10.

Tickets for the HSCC Superprix at Brands Hatch on 13 July are available on the gate for £22 , with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click   here.
