Brookes fastest to turn up the heat on Byrne

Friday, July 18 2014

Josh Brookes is gunning to turn the heat up on his rivals in the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend and the Australian had ended the opening day by setting a blistering pace in the heat on the Grand Prix circuit ahead of Shane 'Shakey' Byrne.

Byrne and Brookes had been almost inseparable at the top of the times in the second session, the triple champion holding off his Milwaukee Yamaha rival by 0.008s until the final two minutes this afternoon. Brookes, who had dashed to the Japanese Embassy between sessions for his visa, proved that his sight-seeing was no distraction and fired in two laps in the closing stages to fire himself ahead of Byrne.

As the pair battled at the front James Ellison remained inside the top three after setting the pace in the opening session this morning. The Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki rider is hunting the team's first win this weekend and showed his determination to hold off triple champion Ryuichi Kiyonari on the Buildbase BMW.

John Hopkins showed that the Tyco Suzuki team are also ready to come out fighting on the Grand Prix circuit, holding a top five position ahead of Tommy Bridewell on the second of the Milwaukee Yamahas.

Chris Walker dropped to seventh but showed consistent pace on the Lloyds British GBmoto Racing Kawasaki with Richard Cooper and Dan Linfoot also in close contention. Jakub Smrz completed the top ten on the Millsport Ducati to again feature a top ten of five different nationalities and five manufacturers.
