Rachel Morris claims bronze medal at Brands Hatch

Friday, September 07 2012

British handcyclist Rachel Morris has added to ParalympicGB's medal count with a bronze in the Women's H1-3 Road Race at Brands Hatch. She crossed the finish line hand in hand with team mate Karen Darke in an attempt to share the medal, but a photo finish judged Morris to have crossed the line marginally ahead.

The pair had cycled side by side for a large part of the race which was staged over 48 kilometres and instead of opting for the traditional sprint finish to the line, decided to cross the finish side by side.

Speaking afterwards to Channel 4, Morris commented: "We both worked so hard together and we're hoping to be able to get the bronze medal together too.

"I've been through a lot so this bronze medal means more to me than the gold I won in Beijing."

Morris had been injured during a training accident in July in Surrey which also saw her training bike written off, leaving her place at London 2012 in doubt at the time.

USA competitiors Marianna Davis and Monica Bascio claimed the gold and silver medals respectively.
