Jochen Mass to make Brands Hatch return at Festival of Porsche

Thursday, September 02 2021

Grand Prix and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jochen Mass will return to the cockpit of a Porsche Group C sports car at Brands Hatch Festival of Porsche this Sunday (5 September).

The German will attend the event as a special guest, and take part in one of the special car demonstrations, driving Porsche 956 #007. Chassis #007 is one of Porsche's most infamous Group C machines, following Stefan Bellof's record-breaking 6m11.130s lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Others who raced 956 #007 in period included British Le Mans favourite Derek Bell, Richard Lloyd, Jack Brabham and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason.

During the 1980s Group C era, Mass was a key part of Porsche's works sports car racing efforts, frequently contesting the Le Mans 24 Hours and other major endurance races behind the wheel of 956s and 962s.

Prior to his sports car career, Mass was a Formula 1 driver for Surtees, McLaren, ATS, Arrows and March. Mass won the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix and was teammate to James Hunt a year later during his epic championship battle with Niki Lauda.

Mass's Porsche story also included victory in Brands Hatch's annual World Sportscar Championship round in 1977, run to a six-hour duration that year, alongside Jacky Ickx in a Porsche 935.

Mass and 956 #007 will take to the track alongside a specially curated selection of Porsche machinery at this weekend's event. The full line-up will include other Porsche cars of historic significance.

Additional event highlights will include an exclusively Porsche race programme, car displays and much more.
