GTWCE Race 2: Mercedes-AMG wins at Brands as Rossi scores points

Sunday, May 01 2022

Raffaele Marciello and Timur Boguslavskiy controlled the second Fanatec GT World Challenge Powered by AWS race of the weekend at Brands Hatch this afternoon with a dominant display, whilst MotoGP convert Valentino Rossi scored his first points of the season.

It was a supreme display from the leading AKKODIS ASP Mercedes-AMG, which never looked like being defeated in the second one-hour Sprint Cup contest of the weekend. Marciello rapidly built a lead in the opening stint, setting a blistering pace to shoot off into the distance around the iconic, full Grand Prix circuit.

For Dries Vanthoor and Charles Weerts, there was a sense of déjà vu as they finished as runners up once again. In race one, they'd finished a close second after Vanthoor held off a hard pressing Marciello late on. This time, the reigning champions' Team WRT Audi R8 lacked the pace to truly hunt down the leaders.

Jim Pla and Jules Gounon completed the rostrum with a good drive in a second AKKODIS ASP Mercedes-AMG, whilst Christopher Haase and Simon Gachet (Audi) and race one winners Pierre Alexandre Jean and Ulysse de Pauw completed the top-five.

There were big cheers around the venue when Valentino Rossi crossed the finish line in eighth position, to secure his first points as a full-time car racer. Many thousands of fans had descended upon the Kent circuit to cheer on the famous MotoGP superstar, and he was greeted by a rapturous reception. His Team WRT co-driver Frederic Vervisch guided the car into a strong position early on before Rossi produced a stellar second stint to retain a position in the top 10.
