BTCC returnee Jackson: “I can’t wait to get started”

Tuesday, March 10 2020

Multiple Kwik Fit British Touring Car race winner Mat Jackson makes a welcome return to the championship this year after a two-year absence.

The 38-year-old has joined the Power Maxed Racing team for his comeback, and was testing the team's Vauxhall Astra at Donington Park today ahead of the season opener on 28-29 March.

"It's mega, it's brilliant to be back and obviously with PMR and the Astra," he commented. "It's a new challenge, it's a new car and I can't wait to get started. I just want to get on with the first round."

After eight years of driving Ford machinery before his enforced absence, Jackson admits it will take time to get used to his new car, but that his first impressions are positive.

"The car feels good, of course it's only the second NGTC car that I've driven so it's interesting to see the difference of how the two cars and built and how they perform, but so far so good.

"Every car is different and there are strengths in everything but this is an extremely well built, well prepared and well turned out car."

Jackson's return reunites him with series legend Jason Plato. The duo were teammates back in 2009 at the RML Chevrolet squad and Jackson believes that the pair will go well again in 2020, but is shying away from setting targets as he gets reacquainted with the BTCC.

"Myself and Jason had a good pairing back in 2009 and we had some great results together and worked well together so it's something that I'm looking forward to. For me it is good to have a teammate as a benchmark and focused on developing the car and the team to help us get the results we're all here for.

"We've just got to find our feet, we've got to see how the championship has moved on, and we'll just have to plug away at it," he said.

The BTCC blasts off at Donington Park on 28-29 March, and will also race at Brands Hatch (Indy) on 11-12 April, Oulton Park on 13-14 June, Snetterton on 25-26 July and the return visit to Brands Hatch (Grand Prix) for the season finale on 10-11 October. Tickets for all rounds are on sale now.
