BENNETTS BSB FINALE - HASLAM’S DOUBLE CELEBRATION

Sunday, October 14 2018

The 2018 Bennetts British Superbike Championship season drew to a close at a rain-soaked Brands Hatch today with 'Pocket Rocket' Leon Haslam celebrating his first championship title and first BSB race win on a Kawasaki on the full Grand Prix circuit.

Haslam claimed the title in Saturday's opening race. Sixth place was enough to secure victory after his closest rival Jake Dixon could manage only second. But sealing the championship wasn't enough - Haslam wanted a win with Kawasaki on the 2.4-mile GP track in his last Bennetts BSB season before moving to the Superbike World Championship in 2019.

Saturday's balmy sunshine made way for a day of rain and a chaotic race two, in which only 14 of the 26 starters crossed the line. But Haslam remained resolute and repeatedly traded places at the front with Jason O'Halloran in the second half of the race. Dixon made a dash for the lead with a handful of laps to go but his success was short-lived, crashing out at Clearways and leaving Haslam clear to power to victory. Tommy Bridewell was second and O'Halloran third.

Race three was a less frenetic affair with Richard Cooper the surprise leader from start to finish, becoming the seventh race winner of the season. Bridewell registered his second runner-up finish of the day, with Dixon third.

The Bennetts BSB Championship top three for 2018 were Haslam, Dixon and Glenn Irwin, who moves from Be Wiser Ducati to replace Haslam at JG Speedfit Kawasaki for his 2019 campaign.  Dixon meanwhile moves to the Moto2 World Championship next season.

Next season's dates have already been announced and tickets will be on sale soon. For more Bennetts BSB news click here.
