Brands gearing up for season highlight as MCE BSB returns

Monday, July 17 2017

Brands Hatch is hosting the biggest sporting event in the region this weekend (July 21/22/23) as the UK's leading motorsport series, the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship, returns to the full Grand Prix circuit, with local hero Shane 'Shakey' Byrne set to entertain his home crowd.

As the championship reaches the halfway point of the season, record-breaker Byrne is just seven points adrift of the standings leader Luke Mossey as he heads into his home round on the spectacular Grand Prix circuit. However with some of the world's leading riders lining up on the grid including Leon Haslam and Josh Brookes, he is going to have to fight all the way to the finish in Sunday's two headline races.

Five-time champion Byrne, who scored a double win last time out at Snetterton, said: "Everyone always says to me about Brands Hatch being 'my circuit'; I guess that might be because I probably like it more than anyone else! That feeling when you turn left at Surtees and head out onto the Grand Prix circuit is like a magical rollercoaster of tarmac and I just can't wait until Friday to get out there.

"My aim for Brands Hatch is to repeat what we did at Snetterton; I would love another double win and to put on a great show for the home crowd. It feels like my season has really started now and both myself and the Be Wiser Ducati team will be doing everything to be strong again this weekend."

The event gets underway on Thursday with the free-of-charge Monster Energy Fans' Thursday when the gates to the venue and campsite are opened at midday. Fans will be able to get closer to the stars of the show with rider interviews taking place on the Monster Energy rig from 2pm, and they can also tour the pits and walk the hallowed tarmac during the afternoon.

The first track action gets underway on Friday with two free practice sessions, followed by qualifying on Saturday building up to the main event on Sunday. The weekend also features a packed schedule of support races including the Dickies British Supersport and the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championships. Also in action will be the breathtaking Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar series which features popular former Superbike star Chris Walker.

There's a wealth of off-track entertainment adding to the festival atmosphere, including a huge open-air concert on Saturday evening in aid of the Care After Combat charity, with compere Jim Davidson OBE introducing stage acts including Beatles and Queen tribute bands. Other attractions include drifting demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday from Monster Energy's three-time European Gymkhana GRiD champion Luke Woodham, a Kawasaki display, fairground, go-karting, children's playground and trade stands.

Tickets for the 'Big Brands Bash' are available from £27 with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
