BTCC returnee Sam Tordoff raring to go with 'fantastic' Focus

Monday, March 26 2018

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship title-challenger Sam Tordoff can't wait for his series comeback at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April after a year's sabbatical from touring cars.

Having previously challenged for the 2016 title in the WSR BMW, Sam raced GT cars last season. Now he'll make his BTCC return with the Motorbase team's brand new Ford Focus RS.

"I enjoyed my time away, said Sam. "I definitely needed to reset and do something different for a while. I had great fun driving the GT cars in British GT and Blancpain GT, but whilst I needed to do that and reset, I much prefer driving on my own than sharing a car."

Now that he's got the car to himself once again, Sam's glad it's one of the Kent-based team's Focus RSs. "Having gone away and done that I've found a great environment in Motorbase. I feel comfortable now in the Focus, it's a fantastic car, they've done a hell of a lot of work with it over the winter, which was ultimately the reason I joined.

"I also believe that the future of BTCC cars is front-wheel-drive (FWD) and I think it makes it a hell of a lot easier to race if you're FWD, so that was one of the criteria for coming back, I definitely wanted a FWD car, and an environment where I was going to mould the team around me."

The 28 year-old also explained that the team has worked hard on the new RS iteration of the Focus, which shares little with its predecessor. "All the body panels have changed," he said. "And that's allowed us to explore various things in terms of aero work and development areas that they couldn't explore before. They've managed to lose some weight, so it's all come together and feels very good, it responds to changes and I think it will be right at the front."

Having led the BTCC standings for half a season, Sam's ready to do this again with Motorbase and can't wait to get started in just over 10 days' time.

"I'm raring to go," Sam said. "The first round will be what it will be and we'll just dial ourselves in - 30 races is a long time, so we'll turn up at Brands and do the best job we can and build up from there."

Tickets for the BTCC at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April available from £28, with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
