BTCC's Chilton ready to start title fight with Motorbase

Saturday, March 24 2018

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race winner Tom Chilton is ready to fight for the title this season, which gets underway at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April.

Having made his BTCC comeback with Power Maxed Vauxhall last year, Chilton moved to Kent's Motorbase team over the winter. He will make his debut in the squad's new Ford Focus RS in two weeks' time.

Speaking at last week's group BTCC test Tom said: "It's looking very good. It's a very different car; this team is a very good race team, very professional, with very good sponsorship, and the Ford Focus is definitely a better chassis. Brands Hatch Indy circuit has always been known as the chassis circuit and also a real drivers' circuit, to be honest.

"I'm very confident with the car so far. We learnt a lot here and from our test in Spain a few weeks back, and I'm looking forward to the Media Day at Donington on Tuesday."

Tom is joined by former BTCC title challenger Sam Tordoff and race winner James Cole in the three-car Motorbase squad and he thinks they'll work well together.

"They're all really good drivers and competitive, very strong," Tom said. "I've looked at Sam's race run, it looked very good so that's promising for the car. I've been focussing more on the qualifying runs, because I always think the BTCC is about qualifying, because then once you're there no-one can get past you!"

The test has left the Reigate racer full of optimism for the opening rounds, and not just because of his new car. "I'm very excited for Brands Hatch," he said. "It's my local circuit, and it is my favourite circuit in the UK, and I think if I can get a podium in the Vauxhall last year, I can definitely try and get a win in this, because it feels to me like a very good car.

"Round the corners it's mighty, really good under brakes in the corner. That's what you need to be good at racing, you need to have that confidence to out-brake someone and I've got that confidence at the moment with the grip in the car, so it's good."

Tickets for the BTCC at Brands Hatch on 7/8 April available from £28, with free entry for under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
