Byrne leads MCE BSB FP1 at #BrandsShowdown

Friday, October 13 2017

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne topped the opening MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship free practice session at Brands Hatch, holding off Jake Dixon and Josh Brookes in the closing minutes on a drying track.

In the early stages Brookes had taken the advantage for Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha as several of his rivals chose to sit out the opening minutes as conditions improved. Christian Iddon and Richard Cooper closed in at the top but Byrne was soon back ahead.

Brookes then claimed the advantage but in the final minutes of the session the defending champion regained the top spot as Dixon edged into second onboard the RAF Regular & Reserves Kawasaki.

Peter Hickman climbed to fourth of the Smiths Racing BMW to force ahead of Jason O'Halloran on the leading Honda Racing Fireblade as Cooper completed the top six on the leading Bennetts Suzuki.

Iddon was seventh fastest for the Tyco BMW team with Jakub Smrz, Sylvain Guintoli and Dan Linfoot completing the top ten.

Championship leader Leon Haslam was 14th fastest on the JG Speedfit Kawasaki.
