Huge Blancpain GT Sprint Cup entry list released

Tuesday, March 14 2017

This year's Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup entry list has been unveiled, with 34 supercars representing seven different manufacturers on a grid that includes former F1 drivers as well as rising stars and established aces. The international series visits Brands Hatch on 6/7 May.

The multi-million pound grid represents many of the world's finest supercar producers, including a five-car effort from reigning champions Team WRT. Enzo Ide will be defending his title alongside Christopher Mies, and their line-up includes former F1 drivers Will Stevens and Markus Winkelhock, who'll team up in an R8 LMS.

Triple Le Mans winner and inaugural WEC Champion Marcel Fassler makes the switch to GT racing with a WRT R8 alongside Dries Vanthoor, brother of former Brands Hatch Blancpain race winner and series champion Laurens. There's a car for another former Blancpain champion, Robin Frijns, whilst rival teams ISR and Sainteloc Racing will also field R8s.

There's a strong seven-car contingent from German rivals Mercedes-Benz, with Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars fielded by works operation Tram HTP and Akka ASP. Much of the driver line-up has yet to be confirmed, but it includes former Blancpain champion Maxi Buhk, former European F3 champion Daniel Juncadella and Jules Gounon, son of 1990s F1 driver Jean-Marc. The German contingent will be completed by two Rowe Racing BMWs, with both cars' line-ups to be confirmed.

Italy is the spiritual home of the supercar, and the list includes four Ferrari 488s, and six Lamborghinis. The Sant'Agata cars are split between five Huracans and one of the older Gallardo models. Amongst those driving the Huracans will be former South African A1GP ace Adrian Zaugg and 2011 FIA F2 Champion Mirko Bortolotti.

There's a strong British contingent too, including Crewe's Bentley. Two Continentals will be entered by Cumbria's M-Sport squad, and the line-up includes former BTCC race-winner Steven Kane and 2009 FIA F2 Champion Andy Soucek.

Woking's McLaren is represented by crack sportscar team Strakka, fielding four 650S supercars. Former British F3 Champions Johnny Kane and Alvaro Parente are both in the line-up, as well as GT ace Rob Bell and former single-seater rising stars Lewis Williamson and Ben Barnicoat.

The teams will take part in two one-hour races at Brands Hatch in May, which forms the second round of the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup. The event will also include supporting action that includes the GT4 European Series Northern Cup and Lotus Cup Europe. There will also be high-speed hypercar demonstrations and a supercar display, plus a funfair and go-karting at the event.
