Local hero Byrne leads MCE BSB FP1

Friday, July 21 2017

Shane 'Shakey' Byrne lapped under the existing record at Brands Hatch to set the pace in the opening free practice session on the Grand Prix circuit, firing the Be Wiser Ducati to the top of the times ahead of Moto Rapido Ducati's John Hopkins by just 0.333s.

Byrne continued to set the benchmark during the session, however Hopkins continued to close; the American had been running within the top five for the majority of the session before dropping down the order in the final ten minutes. However his last sequence of laps launched him back into the top three.

Smiths Racing BMW's Peter Hickman climbed to third place in the final moments, displacing Josh Brookes who had another strong session onboard the Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha. The Australian led fellow countryman Jason O'Halloran, who narrowly fended of Dan Linfoot on the second of the Honda Fireblades.

Billy McConnell was seventh fastest on the Quattro Plant FS-3 Kawasaki ahead of championship leader Luke Mossey with James Ellison and Jake Dixon completing the top ten. Leon Haslam narrowly missed out on the top ten in eleventh place just ahead of the returning Christian Iddon on the leading Tyco BMW.

Glenn Irwin was 20th on the timesheets, returning from his dislocated and fractured shoulder and elbow injuries from Knockhill.
