Road star Dunlop set for Sidecar appearance at Brands Hatch

Wednesday, October 05 2016

Road race hero Michael Dunlop will make the switch to three wheels for the final round of the Hyundai Heavy Industries British Sidecar Championship, which supports the MCE British Superbike Championship Final Showdown at Brands Hatch next weekend (14/15/16 October) as the thirteen times TT winner joins experienced contender Dan Sayle in the Birchall Brother's TT-winning 600 LCR Honda.

Dunlop, who follows in the footsteps of his road racing legend father Robert and uncle Joey, has previously made an appearance in a Sidecar. Four years ago after an appearance at Jurby, the pairing campaigned Nick Crowe's outfit to Oliver's Mount for their official debut and impressed by finishing in the runner-up spot.

The Hawk Racing BMW was once again the chosen weapon for Dunlop in this year's TT and he earned a brace of victories for team owner Stuart Hicken, who has played no small part in making the sidecar venture happen.

Dunlop said: "I'm looking forward to having the craic in the outfit at Brands Hatch. It has been a few years since I last had a go and I have always been interested in giving it a go in a sidecar so this will give me the chance to have a run around.

"I think it is going to be different to what I am used and I know that the boys in that championship don't hang around because they are on the top of their game but I am coming out with one of the best passengers in the world. I have no time to mess about but I don't particularly want to end up upside down either!

"I am going to be taking baby steps because I would still like to have a go at the Sidecar with some more races in the British Championship and hopefully some day at the TT. I just want to give it a good go next weekend. I want to say thanks to the Birchalls for letting me use their TT LCR Honda and to everyone for sorting the job out."

Roger Body said: "The inclusion of former Superbike star Chris Walker into our championship has stimulated interest beyond our wildest expectations, particularly as he has delivered such a strong performance. He and Ashley Hawes were on the pace from the word go. I fully expect Michael to bring an equal amount of attention and appeal to this last championship round. As for 2017, just watch this space, we have more to come."

Stuart Hicken commented: "We have enjoyed working with Michael on the roads and his occasional short circuit outings. He is a great character and an amazing talent. I cannot wait to see how he fares on top-class sidecar machinery such as Ben and Tom Birchall's race-winning Honda. He is a consummate professional and I can assure you, this is a serious venture."

The next round of the MCE British Superbike Championship will be the title decider on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit on 14/15/16 October. For more information and to book for the triple-header event call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
