BTCC bruiser Austin joins Brands Hatch Legends field

Wednesday, October 26 2016

British Touring Car Championship race-winner Rob Austin will make a guest appearance in the Legends Cars Championship at Brands Hatch next weekend (5-6 November), which will feature on the support bill to the Truck Racing and Fireworks event.

Austin currently drives for BTCC team Handy Motorsport, whose owner Simon Belcher is a former Legend racer and the UK importer for the cars. Austin will trade his regular Toyota Avensis for Handy Motorsport's 5/8th scale Legends hot rod for the Indy circuit races. The fan favourite is renowned for creating plenty of fireworks on the track, making him an appropriate addition to the Kent circuit's annual Brands Hatch spectacular.

Speaking to Motorsport News, Austin, who will take part in all six of the weekend's races said: "It will be a one-off but I love the look of the racing and the locked rear differential on the cars should make it really good fun - the cars are sideways all over the place.

"It will be great to get back into a rear-wheel-drive car again like the [Rob Austin Racing BTCC] Audi was - I have definitely missed that. I will have to start all of the races from the back because I am a newcomer to the championship, but that is OK - I got pretty used to starting near the back this season so overtaking shouldn't be a problem."

With reverse grids guaranteeing plenty of overtaking, and one of the most exciting drivers in the BTCC appearing, the Legends are sure to provide some of the most entertaining support races at this event.

Austin won't be the only recent BTCC racer taking part in the event, as 2013 Jack Sears Trophy champion Lea Wood will be contesting the Pickup Truck category, in which he now races. The Hereford driver currently lies third in the standings ahead of the final two rounds.

The main race action of the weekend will come in the form of eight rounds of the British Truck Racing Championship, five of which will take place on the Sunday ahead of a spectacular fireworks display as darkness falls.

Tickets to Truck Racing and Fireworks at Brands Hatch on 5/6 November are available in advance from £19, or £12 for 13-15 year-olds, with free entry to under-13s. For more information call 0843 453 9000 or click  here.
