Ahmed claims BRDC F3 Autumn Trophy with race three win

Sunday, October 30 2016

Carlin's Enaam Ahmed took victory in the third race of the Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton, as he was chased home by Douglas Motorsport's Joey Mawson. With fog closing in, the meeting was abandoned ahead of race four, meaning that Enaam Ahmed was crowned Duo BRDC British F3 Autumn Trophy Champion.

With the forced cancellation of qualifying due to heavy fog, the grid order for the penultimate race of the Autumn Trophy was set by championship order. That meant that Ahmed would lead the field off from pole position with Dan Ticktum for company on the front-row, and title rival Mawson in third.

As the lights went out, it was Mawson's Douglas Motorsport team-mate Jamie Caroline who made the best getaway rocketing up to P4 as James Pull and Ben Hingeley came to grief through Riches, with the pair making contact and heading into retirement.

Ahmed held his lead through the first few corners but was soon under attack from Ticktum who attempted to find a way past into Agostini. Unfortunately for the Double R Racing man, contact was made between himself and Ahmed, resulting in Ticktum spinning out onto the grass to put an end to his race and Autumn Trophy challenge.

Owing to the trio of cars off the circuit, the safety car was called for and racing conditions neutralised. The action resumed after a couple of laps and Ahmed held his lead through Riches, although Mawson stayed close on his gearbox, affording no room for the Carlin man to make a mistake.

Further back, Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing's Abdullah Al Rawahi had an off track moment at Oggies, relegating him from sixth to eighth. Meanwhile up front, Mawson was pressuring Ahmed but couldn't mount a sustained attack. The 16-year-old saw out the final few laps without incident to claim his second win of the weekend, and extend his advantage to 17 points over Joey Mawson.

With the fog closing in once more, the meeting was abandoned ahead of race four with Ahmed being declared the 2016 Duo BRDC British Formula 3 Autumn Trophy Champion. Mawson finished second overall with South African Callan O'Keeffe taking third.
