Vauxhall set for BTCC return in 2017 with Power Maxed Racing

Tuesday, November 22 2016

Vauxhall is set to make its Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship comeback in 2017 with Power Maxed Racing. The agreement will see the return of the Vauxhall Astra, which dominated the championship at the turn of the century.

Power Maxed Racing, which previously ran a brace of Chevrolet Cruzes, will switch allegance to sister GM brand Vauxhall. The two Vauxhall Astras will also be run as a Manufacturer entry, meaning that the marque will make its first official appearance since 2009.

Vauxhall's previous BTCC sojourn began in 1989 when the marque won the title with series legend John Cleland in a MkII Astra. A second championship was claimed with the Cavalier in 1995, which was soon followed by a period of absolute dominance during the early years of the BTC era from 2001 until 2004 with the Astra, driven to glory by Jason Plato, Yvan Muller and James Thompson.

Two further titles were won with Fabrizio Giovanardi and the Vauxhall Vectra under the Triple Eight banner, before Vauxhall's withdrawal in 2009. Since then the marque has been unofficially represented by Triple Eight and ES Racing, with Power Maxed Racing-affiliated Dave Newsham scoring the last Vauxhall-associated win in 2012. Thorney Motorsport, Team HARD and BMR also ran a privately-developed Vauxhall Insignia, which last appeared in 2014.

Adam Weaver Managing Director of Automotive Brands, Team Principal of Power Maxed Racing commented "We are incredibly pleased and proud to be working with Vauxhall and to be the team that brings this iconic and highly successful brand back to the BTCC. The all new Astra is a fantastic car and it is no surprise that it was voted 2016 European Car of the Year - it will make a show-stopping BTCC challenger.

"Shells have now been supplied and work is well advanced in turning the new Astra into a highly competitive BTCC car. We are aiming to announce a talented and exciting driver line-up in the near future; which will further motivate and inspire everyone involved in this exciting project."

Alan Gow, BTCC Series Director, commented "It is fantastic to be welcoming Vauxhall back to the BTCC as a manufacturer entry. Its history and pedigree is there for all to see and I have no doubt that the highly professional and experienced team at Power Maxed Racing will be great partners."
