Veteran Trimmer to demonstrate Hunt McLaren this weekend

Thursday, June 30 2016

Racing veteran Tony Trimmer, who participated in Formula One races during the 1970s, will return to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit at this weekend's Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix (1/2/3 July), behind the wheel of a McLaren M23, as driven to the 1976 World Championship by James Hunt. Tony will demonstrate the McLaren at lunch time on Sunday.

Resplendent in the classic orange and white McLaren livery, the Frank Lyons-owned machine appears exactly as it did during the infamous season of 40 years ago, when Hunt claimed the title from Ferrari's Niki Lauda in nail-biting fashion at the championship finale in Fuji, Japan.

Brands Hatch provided one of the key moments of the year, as Hunt was disqualified on a technicality after winning the race on the road. Following an early red flag period, Hunt failed to follow the correct protocol when returning to the pit-lane, and was only allowed to rejoin the restarted event following uproar from the crowd. He was inspired by this setback to put together a championship-winning run in the latter part of the season.

Hunt was also victorious in that year's Race of Champions non-championship event at the Kent circuit in his M23. The Historic Race of Champions has been revived for this weekend with a fantastic grid of powerful 1970s single-seaters.

Trimmer, who pilots the M23 this weekend, has plenty of experience behind the wheel of such a machine, and even won the Aurora British F1 in one during the 1978 season. His long career included a number of appearances in the original Race of Champions, behind the wheel of cars such as the Lotus 72, a British F3 Championship crown, and victory in an F3 race at Monaco.

Tony is also somewhat of a Brands Hatch specialist, having driven the circuit's SuperRide experience car for a number of years, a fact he proved recently by winning an F5000 race on the Indy circuit at American SpeedFest. This was despite the fact that he didn't have the most competitive machinery and he was returning following a two-year absence from competitive motorsport.

Tickets for the Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix are available on the gate for £10 on Friday and £24 on both Saturday and Sunday. For more information, please call 0843 453 9000 or click here
