Garrett wins truck opener, but Oliver spin puts Summerfield ahead

Saturday, November 07 2015

Luke Garrett won the opening British Truck Racing Championship round of the weekend at Brands Hatch today (Saturday), whilst second-placed Mat Summerfield now has one hand on the Division One title after rival Stuart Oliver spun out of contention whilst battling for the class lead.

Steven Powell led the field away at the start, before Division Two title challenger Luke Garrett took the head of the field, with Powell happy to let him get away. Meanwhile in Division One, Stuart Oliver challenged Mat Summerfield at Paddock Hill before tucking in behind, but he soon nipped by to lead at Paddock Hill, a move that he needed to make to assert his authority on the championship leader.

The two Division One title contenders dominated their class as they caught the Division Two runners, where at the front, Powell was holding off Adam Bint and the rest as Garrett pulled away in front.

Summerfield piled the pressure on Oliver as they passed the slower machines, and after half a lap held up by Jim Bennett, Oliver lost concentration at Paddock Hill, sliding wide into the gravel to let his title rival through.

Oliver regrouped and was soon back on Summerfield's tail as they reached Bint and Powell. As they passed Powell, Oliver tried to take the class lead at Clearways, but the pair lightly touched, sending Oliver into a costly spin that dropped him down to 16th overall.

Summerfield, now secure in the Division One lead, was unable to catch Garrett for the lead, but with Oliver seventh in class, he now has an eight-point advantage in the standings, with just 40 remaining. Garrett was only one place ahead of Division Two title rival Powell, so the gap has reduced to 32 points, but Garrett will need to outscore Powell by three points in the second race to take the title battle down to the last day.

Behind the top two, Ryan Smith completed the podium, albeit almost 14 seconds behind, followed by David Jenkins, Powell, Ray Coleman, Richard Collett, Shane Brereton, Simon Cole and Adam Bint.
