Palmer storms to BRDC F4 pole position at Brands Hatch

Saturday, August 01 2015

Will Palmer took a dominant pole position as he led a HHC Motorsport one-two on the Grand Prix track at Brands Hatch in qualifying today (August 1). His fastest lap of 1m24.685s put him 0.629s clear of team-mate Harri Newey with Ecurie Ecosse youngster Ciaran Haggerty showing well to claim third.

In glorious sunshine at the Kent venue, the BRDC Formula 4 drivers took to the 2.433-mile circuit for the 20 minute qualifying session and it was Scot Ciaran Haggerty that set the initial pace. He was quickly knocked off top spot by the Chris Dittmann Racing pairing of Omar Ismail and Tom Jackson, with the red-and-yellow cars trading times as if sparring with each other.

The HHC Motorsport duo of Will Palmer and Harri Newey began posting personal best sectors shortly after and it was championship leader Palmer that jumped to the top of the timesheets with a 1m25.706s; Newey slotting into second just 0.101s slower. On the next tour, Palmer extended his advantage with a 1m24.685s, a time that would ultimately prove the fastest lap of the session.

Omar Ismail briefly reclaimed second spot before 17-year-old Newey relegated him down the order as he moved to within 0.651s of his team-mate. Jackson moved ahead of his stable mate Ismail before Haggerty pushed them both down the grid as he clocked a 1m25.540s to jump ahead of the pair into third.

Further back, championship contender Rodrigo Fonseca and Oulton Park winner Jordan Albert were trading times in seventh and eighth respectively, with the Mexican driver coming out on top by the end of the session. With two minutes remaining, both Akhil Rabindra and Sisa Ngebulana spun off into the gravel and the red flag flew to halt the session. With such little time remaining, the chequered flag soon followed and Palmer claimed his fourth P1 start of the year.

Jack Lang, who is running alongside Douglas Motorsport this weekend impressed to qualify sixth with Jack Bartholomew and Sisa Ngebulana rounding out the top-10.

Race one of the weekend at Brands Hatch starts at 15:55pm and you can follow all the action through live timing and updates on the official Formula 4 website here.
