F5000 single-seater thunder joins the SpeedFest III line-up

Tuesday, April 21 2015

Thunderous Formula 5000 single-seaters will blast around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit at American SpeedFest III on Sunday 7 June in two special races, recalling the American open-wheel racing scene of the 1970s. These will be organised in conjunction with the Historic Sports Car Club, with a pair of 15-minute races scheduled.

Between 1967 and 1976, Formula 5000 cars, or Formula As as they were known across the Atlantic, starred in the SCCA Continental Championship which, at the time, was one of the most prestigious single-seater championships operating in the USA. The series attracted revered drivers such as 1979 Formula One World Champion Jody Scheckter, five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell, all-round American racing hero Mario Andretti, and multiple IndyCar Champion Al Unser to tackle circuits such as Watkins Glen, Road America, and the Streets of Long Beach in powerful Lolas, Chevrons and Eagles.

Ex-Grand Prix driver and period F5000 front-runner Ian Ashley is expected to enter, having returned to competition in the HSCC's Derek Bell Trophy last season.

Other likely entrants include 2013 FIA Historic Formula One Champion Greg Thornton, in a Surtees TS11, and international sports car star Michael Lyons in a family-run F5000 machine.

Neil Glover, a perennial front-runner in the HSCC Derek Bell Trophy, plans to enter the event in a Chevron B37 that was formerly raced by Peter Gethin, who famously defeated a field of Grand Prix cars behind the wheel of an F5000 at the 1973 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch, a non-championship race for Formula One cars.

Further details will be announced in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes on www.speedfest.co.uk  for the latest.

The single-seaters join an eclectic racing line-up, alongside headline action from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, and classic muscle car action in the Bernie's V8s series.

Tickets for American SpeedFest III are available online for £21 in advance, with a discounted £12 race available for 13-15-year-olds, and free entry for under-13s. For more information please call 0843 453 9000 or click here.
