World rally champion to race at Brands Hatch Mini Festival

Tuesday, March 25 2014

Swedish rally legend Stig Blomqvist will become the latest famous name to take part in the Brands Hatch Mini Festival when the event returns for its third running on Sunday 11 May. Blomqvist will race in the SU Carburettors Anglo-French Battle, when historic Minis from the UK take on their French counterparts.

The 1984 World Rally Champion will partner his son Tom, a former Red Bull Junior Team member and 2011 McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award finalist, driving a 1964 Mini Cooper S.

Last year's Brands Hatch Mini Festival saw AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson, celebrity chef James Martin and Kelvin Fletcher of Emmerdale fame all take to the Brands Hatch Indy circuit behind the wheel of classic racing Minis, with James Martin famously winning the Champion of Mini Festival race.

Nick Swift, promoter of the SU Carburettors Anglo-French Battle said: "I can't wait to see what Stig thinks of an FIA Historic Mini with one of our 2014 spec Swiftune engines.

"It will be interesting to get feedback from him, and whilst he may not have 600hp under his right foot like the most powerful Group B rally cars he has competed in, an FIA Historic Mini weighing just 620KG with one of our latest spec engines certainly grabs your attention around Brands!

"Rauno Aaltonen has competed at four Goodwood Revival meetings with one of our engines and came 2nd overall at the Mini only race in 2009, so we like Scandinavian rally drivers!"

The Brands Hatch Mini Festival takes place on Sunday 11 May, with a timetable full of the UK's best Mini racing and off-track entertainment for all the family. Tickets are free for Mini owners who arrive in their Mini, and their passengers can take advantage of a special discount. Click here for more details.

All other tickets start at £14 in advance, with free admission for children under 13. Click here to book.
