Three SpeedFest wins in four for Vilarino!

Sunday, June 08 2014

Spanish double champion Ander Vilarino picked up the fourth win at Brands Hatch of his career and his third American SpeedFest win in two years with a dominant display in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series.

Anthomy Kumpen claimed second and the championship lead, and 1993 Le Mans winner Christophe Bouchut took third with a late pass on Borja Garcia. Bas Leinders survived a mid-race skirmish for fifth with Gabillon rounding out the top six.

Vilarino was unmatched throughout, leading from lights to flag as Kumpen threatened in the early stages without beaing able to force a move.

The closest fighting was behind, with Saturday's winner Eddie Cheever III resisting the constant challenge of Leinders. Their fighting was three-pronged when Romain Iannetta involved himself, and the trio even took to Paddock Hill Bend three wide. The inevitable contact came and dropped Cheever III and Ianetta back but Leinders survived to finally take his fifth position.

A brief safety car period for Guerin falling victim to the Paddock Hill Gravel wiped out the two-second advantage Vilarino had steadily built, bunching Anthony Kumpen and Christophe Bouchut onto his tail.

Much like Saturday's opener, the safety was quickly required again as soon as the cars had exited Paddock Hill as three cars collided, involving Lauda and early protagonists Cheever III and Ianetta. The race ended under the safety car, securing Vilarino's comfortable victory.

The winner said: "I love this track, it's my favourite track on the calendar, the fans are geart and they really know their racing!

"I was made to work hard, Anthony Kumpem said he was warm and if he was hot it must have been difficult!"
