NASCARs warm up for American SpeedFest II scorcher

Friday, June 06 2014

Brands Hatch began its annual transformation into a scene from Daytona today (Friday 6 June) ahead of this Sunday's American SpeedFest II, as the cars from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series took to the track for the weekend's opening practice sessions. The brightly liveried and numbered stock cars look right at home within the Kent circuit's natural amphitheatre.

There were famous names among those on track, with Mathias Lauda and Eddie Cheever III, sons of former-Formula 1 stars Niki and Eddie respectively, both competing this weekend. The on-track battles are expected to be extremely close with Borja Garcia and reigning champion Ander Vilarino separated by just two hundredths of a second in the day's opening test session, with Lauda close behind in fourth.

In the second free practice session, Ander Vilarino finished on top. Frederic Gabillon and Borja Garcia were again impressive ending the session a few tenths shy of Vilarino's benchmark of 49.110s, the fastest time of the day. Finnish GT racer Markus Palttala and Anthony Gandon both improved in the closing stages, moving to third and fourth place. View the full results.

SpeedFest II looks set for a perfect summer's day on Sunday 8 June with temperatures expected to hit 24 degrees. The result should be a spectacular sight of over 1,000 classic American cars sparkling in the sunshine along with a special display of Mustangs and GT40s to celebrate their respective 50th anniversaries. Historic race cars including a race-winning Penske IndyCar and a Formula 5000 car driven to many victories by Mario Andretti will also be show, joined by some of the UK's unique dragsters.

Four live bands will entertain the crowds, and so too will monster trucks, mountainboarders, and large adventure courses including a zip line, high ropes and more.

With American food filling the venue with a scent of the States, free children's entertainers and activities, American SpeedFest II will be an unmissable day out for all the family on Sunday 8 June.

Visit www.speedfest.co.uk for more details. Tickets for American SpeedFest II cost £25 on the gate with free entry for children under 13.
