Eager Cheever can't wait for NASCAR race

Saturday, June 07 2014

An excited Eddie Cheever III is hoping to convert his maiden pole position in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series into a maiden win at Brands Hatch. The V8 machines return to the track later today for their first race of the weekend, competing for bragging rights ahead of American SpeedFest II on Sunday.

The American-Italian, son of ex-F1 racer and IndyCar legend Eddie Cheever, stole pole with just seconds to run in the session by just 0.033s from Ander Vilarino in an incredibly competitive qualifying.

"It's really, really close, I'm really happy!" Cheever said after a session in which the top 18 were covered by three-quarters of a second.

"I think there are five drivers in the same hunderdth of a second, luckily I had a clear lap. I can't wait to start the race, let's hope it's another first place!"

The 21-year-old has recent experience of the Brands Hatch Indy circuit, albeit in a very different car. He added his Chevrolet couldn't have been any better. "The car was really good, everything felt awesome.

"I raced here last year in the Formula Three Euro Series so it's my second time here. It's a really nice circuit and I love the first corner. I can't wait to race."

Cheever knows he will have to work hard for his first win, and is certainly looking forward to the lights going out: "It's really tight and I think all 30 drivers are really good. Let's hope I'll be the first one to cross the line."

The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series opening race starts at 12.30pm, tickets for today's action cost £14 on the gate. American SpeedFest II features the main race on Sunday 8 June, with plenty of great entertainment for all the family.

Tickets cost £25 on the gate on Sunday with free admission for children 12 years and under. Visit www.speedfest.co.uk for more details.
