Boucenna scythes through pack for NASCAR Elite 2 win

Saturday, June 07 2014

Wilfried Boucenna picked his way through an incident-packed Elite 2 race at Brands Hatch in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series to claim his first win of the season. He passed Maxime Dumarey with a brave move at Paddock Hill Bend for the win ahead of tomorrow's second race at American SpeedFest II.

Denis Dupont, Thomas Ferrando and Timeo Arroyo all passed Dumary late on to drop him to fifth at the flag, with Luca Pirri completing the top six for CAAL Racing.

The race followed the lead of the earlier Elite 1 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series race, for professional racers, and provided plenty of thrilling entertainment. British guest racer Bradley Smith was in the thick of the action, getting the best of the starts to jump from sixth to third. That third place became second when early leader and pole-sitter Francesca Linossi pulled off at Clearways.

Contact ensued as Smith moved for the lead, dropping the Radical SR3 Challenge champion to third, and further contact spun him back to the midfield. He was then turned around at Druids to bring out the safety car.

Boucenna made the most of the restart to dive up the inside at Paddock Hill for the lead, just holding on.

A second safety car period left the pack with a one lap dash to the flag after a trio of cars careered into the gravel at Clearways. Dupont made his pass on Dumarey on the resumption after bump drafting down the start finish straight. Ferrando, who started down in 20th position, and Arroyo both followed him through at Paddock Hill to demote the unfortunate Belgian from the podium places.
