Max Papis to field 2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series squad

Friday, January 17 2014

NASCAR road course specialist Max Papis will enter Max Papis Racing into the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, the Italian confirmed today (16/01). Rising star and fellow Italian Kevin Gilardoni will drive the #99 machine in the championship's Elite Division.

Gilardoni, a Mégane Trophy Eurocup front-runner and 2012 Formula Renault Italia 2.0 champion, will also head to America to contest selected Late Model races this season alongside his Elite Division campaign.

Papis will base his eponymous squad in the States and expects to announce the team's Open Division driver within the next few weeks.

'Mad Max', who holds the record for the most NASCAR starts for a European driver and drove seven times for Footwork in Formula One, is no stranger to the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, having competed at Tours Speedway and Monza last season.

"From its beginning in 2009, the series has improved a lot and especially in building this strong link with the USA and NASCAR. The involvement of Max Papis and his U.S. based team, with its perfect knowledge of the U.S. NASCAR way of racing, is the best proof of the strength of this link and of the international dimension of our series. Benvenuti al Max Papis Racing!"

Joe Balash, NASCAR's International Competition Liaison added: "It is great to see a successful global racer like Max Papis become an owner in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series. Max understands what it takes to reach the highest levels of NASCAR racing and is perfectly positioned to share that knowledge by having a team compete in the series.

"His international racing experience will benefit everyone."

NASCAR fans can see Max Papis Racing compete when the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series visits SpeedFest II on Sunday 8 June. Tickets start at £21 with children under 13 are admitted free. Click here to book.
