Ecurie Ecosse hires BMW's Sims for British GT title attack

Thursday, January 30 2014

BMW Motorsport factory team driver Alexander Sims has signed up to race a Z4 for legendary squad Ecurie Ecosse in this season's Avon Tyres British GT Championship, starting at Oulton Park on 19/21 April.

Sims, who is a former recipient of the prestigious McLaren Autosport BRDC Award for young drivers, will join existing driver Marco Attard for the outfit's third year in the championship. The Ecurie Ecosse legacy stretches back to the 1950s, when they competed at Le Mans, winning the 24 Hour classic in 1956.

The Scottish team finished third in last year's championship standings, and the addition of Sims alongside Attard suggests that the Barwell Motorsport-run squad is aiming for nothing less than the 2014 title. With rival outfit 888 Optimum confirming their involvement, there will be at least three of the German sportscars on the grid.

"I'm over the moon, as getting a full-time drive in a championship as prestigious as British GT is just fantastic," said Sims. "It's a great opportunity to embed myself within BMW's network of teams, and to work alongside a gentleman driver as talented as Marco. Ecurie Ecosse and Barwell enjoy a very impressive track record together, with last year especially strong thanks to Marco and Olly. I simply cannot wait for us to begin working together."

"I'm absolutely thrilled to have such a fantastic driver line-up, and it's great to be able to welcome Alexander to our fold," said Barwell Team Principal Mark Lemmer. "He is undoubtedly one of the most exciting young British talents in the world of GT racing. I fully expect Ecurie Ecosse and Barwell to be pushing for both titles!"

"I am delighted that Ecurie Ecosse will be returning to British GT this year for another crack at the title, added Ecurie Ecosse Team Principal Hugh McCaig. "The championship is extremely competitive, but I'm confident that we'll be capable of delivering at the highest level thanks to the hard work of every team member, driver, supplier and loyal sponsor."
