Matty Graham crowned as BRDC F4 Winter Champion

Sunday, November 24 2013

Hillspeed's Kieran Vernon has claimed a maiden F4 win in today's final Winter Championship race, but Matty Graham is confirmed as the F4 Winter Champion with a sixth place finish.

Vernon made a great start to take the lead at turn one, passing pole sitter Sennan Fielding, and then held off a race-long challenge from Pietro Fittipaldi to claim his first F4 victory.

Fittipaldi finished just under a second away from Vernon, while HHC Motorsport's Sennan Fielding claimed third, and third overall in the championship standings. Jake Cook's fourth place finish for Hillspeed was good enough to secure second overall in the standings.

Will Palmer drove an excellent race to climb from 10th on the grid to take fifth in the race, and in the championship standings, while Graham's sixth place confirmed him as the Winter Champion.

17 year old Graham simply needed to finish the race to be assured of the title. He started fourth but was pushed down the order on the first lap. Needing to drive safely to take the crown, he still launched an audacious move around the outside of Falco Wauer at Druids on lap 13, following Palmer who had also passed the Norwegian earlier. Graham then kept a decent gap to claim sixth and take the crown.

Wauer was left to claim seventh for Enigma Motorsport, and finishes fourth in the championship. Matteo Ferrer finished eighth in the race having started 11th, with Fredrik Johansen completing his Winter campaign with ninth in the race and eighth overall in the standings. Dimitris Papanastasiou completed the top 10 in the race for Hillspeed and finishes ninth overall in the standings.

At the front Vernon was still holding off Fittipaldi, with the gap as low as 0.3s at one point. The ex-Formula Palmer Audi and Formula Renault BARC racer kept his cool though, and is classified seventh overall in the standings despite missing the first round at Snetterton.

"It's been a great weekend and it's ended perfectly" race winner Vernon enthused afterwards. The weekend has got better and better and I wasn't expecting three podiums to be honest. I'm Over the moon, I haven't won since 2011 and I'm chuffed to bits. Thanks to Hillspeed for getting me to grips with the car. Pietro pushed me hard and caught me quick and it took me a while to find my pace, but I knew if I held my line he'd find it hard to pass."

Winter Champion Matty Graham enthused afterwards: "It's an amazing feeling. We've worked hard and Douglas Motorsport have done an excellent job. There was a bit of pressure coming into the series as I was touted as a favourite but I've done what I came here to do and I'm very happy with myself. Hopefully we can use this as a springboard to Europe next season!"
