Graham takes title advantage with race three win

Sunday, November 24 2013

Douglas Motorsport's Matty Graham has extended his championship advantage with victory in F4 race three at Brands Hatch.

Graham made a good start to lead into the first corner, while Pietro Fittipaldi from fourth had a great get away to move into second ahead of Sennan Fielding.

Graham was able to extend his lead frequently, but rain started falling after the first few laps, making conditions treacherous. Graham kept his head though and was able to extend a comfortable margin of over four seconds to take the Winter Championship advantage heading to this afternoon's final race of the series.

Kieran Vernon claimed second for Hillspeed, passing Pietro Fittipaldi late on, who finished third. Graham's nearest title challenger Jake Cook claimed fourth having started fifth, but was running second in the final stages before spinning at Paddock Hill Bend with three laps remaining, meaning Graham holds a 17 point lead heading to the final race with 30 remaining.

Sennan Fielding held third early on and was challenging Fittipaldi for second but was passed on lap 13 at Druids by Kieran Vernon. Fielding was then passed by Cook on lap 14 and was forced to settle for fifth place.

A fighting drive from Falco Wauer saw the Norwegian take sixth place for Enigma Motorsport, while Fredrik Johansen put in a strong performance to take seventh for Chris Dittmann Racing after a late overtake on Gosia Rdest who finished eighth.

Dimitris Papanastasiou claimed ninth for Hillspeed and a lap down, with Will Palmer 10th, four laps down after being forced to change his front wing. Matteo Ferrer was the only non-finisher, retiring on lap one at Druids.

Speaking afterwards, Graham enthused: "It seemed like nothing was going to go my way at the start! On my side of the grid it was a bit damp but I still managed to make a good start. I was starting to get a good gap in the dry in the opening laps and feeling quite confident and it started to rain. As we were all on slicks it was very slippery but I managed to hang on and pull away a bit and get an important win.

"We have to work it out as we're almost assured of the championship now with the dropped scores, and hopefully I can just relax in the last race and bring the car home in the last race."
