Graham takes crucial F4 race three pole in second qualifying

Sunday, November 24 2013

Douglas Motorsport's Matty Graham will start on pole position after a fascinating second qualifying session at Brands Hatch.

On a greasy surface, drivers took two different options ahead of the 20 minute session. Falco Wauer, Kieran Vernon, Dimitris Papanastasiou, Fredrik Johansen, Gosia Rdest and Jake Cook opted to start on wet tyres, while the HHC duo of Will Palmer and Sennan Fielding, and the MGR pair of Pietro Fittipaldi and Matteo Ferrer opted for wets.

In the queue at the end of the pit lane, Graham who was on wets was wheeled back to his pit where the Douglas Motorsport crew quickly changed him onto dry tyres. Jake Cook pitted immediately after the start of the session to switch to dry tyres, opting to mirror the strategy of his nearest title rival.

Initially the wet tyres were the way to go with Falco Wauer the early front runner, but by the mid point in the session, the dry tyres had heated sufficiently and Ferrer, Fielding and Graham all took turns at the top.

With seven minutes remaining, Graham began to take charge of the session, frequently taking large chunks off his lap times and eventually setting a 46.922s to take his third pole of the Winter Championship. As it turned out, his second fastest lap time was also good enough for pole position.

In between Graham's constant improvements, Fielding occasionally popped onto the top spot, only to be regularly usurped by Graham. Nonetheless, Fielding will start second ahead of Hillspeed's Kieran Vernon and MGR's Fittipaldi. Current second placed man in the standings Jake Cook will line up only fifth, potentially giving Graham a chance to improve his championship lead during the race. Cook though was only 0.4s off Graham's time, with the top eight runners covered by less than a second.

Ferrer lines up sixth after running near the front during the majority of the session, while early pace setter Wauer will be ruing his decision to start on wet tyres, only pitting mid way through the session to change to slick tyres. Race one winner Will Palmer will start eighth ahead of Papanastasiou who was one of the quicker drivers on wet tyres. Gosia Rdest completes the top 10 for Douglas Motorsport with Fredrik Johansen 11th for Chris Dittmann Racing.

The first race of the day will start at 11.55.
