Bell rings in fastest free practice time at Brands Hatch GP

Saturday, July 27 2013

Douglas Team E-Lites' Matt Bell set the fastest time in this morning's (Saturday 27 July) free practice session on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit.

On F4s maiden visit to the Grand Prix circuit, the drivers were quick to take to the track to get as much running as possible, and it was Ross Gunn and Charlie Robertson who led the way during the opening exchanges with lap times initially in the 1m31s.

Times quickly tumbled and Robertson was the first driver to get into the 1m26s bracket, and for a while looked as if he would end the session on top.

But with five minutes remaining, it was Jake Hughes who was the first to make up ground, setting a time within 0.006s of the fastest time. Matt Bell then almost matched it, with the top three at that stage covered by 0.046s.

On the next tour Bell took over at the top, with a time 0.432s ahead of Robertson who wound up second, and Hughes who took the third fastest time.

Matty Graham was fourth for Sean Walkinshaw Racing, ahead of championship leader Jake Dalton with Jack Barlow sixth. Seb Morris was seventh for Hillspeed, Raoul Hyman eighth, Gunn ninth and Diego Menchaca completing the top 10.

Qualifying for the BRDC F4 Championship on the Brands Hatch GP circuit takes place at 11.50am with full updates and live timing available on this website.

"I know this circuit very well which hopefully this weekend will play to my advantage" Bell noted afterwards. "I love this circuit. It's only practice so it's all to play for in qualifying, and the other drivers will improve their pace as they get used to the circuit. I think we've got a bit more speed in the bag but we will see how it goes, and it looks as if the weather will play a part too.

"I'd wouldn't mind if it's wet today and dry tomorrow! It's the same for everyone so I'm not too fussed, we were quick in qualifying in the wet at Snetterton so there's no reason why we shouldn't be fast in the wet here either."
