Matty Graham becomes tenth F4 race winner in race two

Sunday, July 28 2013

Matty Graham has taken his first F4 race win in race two at Brands Hatch, becoming the 10th winner so far this season.

The karting graduate led home team mate Jack Barlow for a Sean Walkinshaw Racing 1-2, with pole sitter Raoul Hyman taking third.

Hyman made a strong start from pole to lead into Paddock Hill Bend from Graham as Barlow settled into third. Hyman initially held a 0.5s lead from Graham, but the SWR driver mounted his attack into Paddock Hill Bend on lap three, taking the inside line and snatching the position despite a small brake lock up.

Graham, 17 from Edmundbyers, County Durham then proceeded to pull away from Hyman, eventually securing the win by over 2.3 seconds.

Hyman spent the majority of the race in second, but came under increasing pressure from Brands Hatch local Jack Barlow. Barlow followed in close pursuit for several laps, before timing it perfectly to copy his team mates' move on Hyman at Paddock Hill on the very last lap.

Jake Hughes claimed fourth for Lanan Racing, finishing 0.2s ahead of championship rival Jake Dalton. The two are now as close in the championship standings as they were on track, with just one point now separating leader Dalton and Hughes in second.

Seb Morris claimed sixth for Hillspeed ahead of Motionsport's Ross Gunn with race one winner Pietro Fittipaldi claiming eighth for Mark Godwin Racing. Struan Moore and Diego Menchaca rounded out the top 10.

Elsewhere it was a disappointing race for two of the championship contenders. Charlie Robertson had a slow start and was in 10th at the end of the first lap having started sixth. Car troubles seemed to be the cause and he eventually finished an uncharacteristic 18th. Matt Bell was forced into retirement at Dingle Dell on lap five.

It was a good event all round for SWR, with Graham and barlow's team mate Zou Sirui charging from 21st on the grid to 14th in the race.

The top three of Graham, Barlow and Hyman were presented with their trophies on the podium by BTCC legend and sports car racer Anthony Reid.

Speaking afterwards, Graham enthused: "From the start Raoul had a bit of a gap but I managed to catch him and make a move into Paddock Hill. I got a little lock up, but I guess the job was done so that was good! I think I was quite consistent on each lap and pulled out a little gap on each lap so by the end I had a nice comfortable gap."

The next race starts at 14.50 with full live timing and text updates available on the official F4 website www.formula4.com.
