Byrne back at the top at Brands Hatch in free practice opener

Alex Lowes topped the official test times yesterday, but in the opening free practice on the Grand Prix circuit this morning Shane 'Shakey' Byrne was fastest on his return to his home circuit ahead of round six of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship.

Byrne started the session as he means to go on this weekend; setting a time early in the session before improvements edged him further ahead but the pack behind were scrapping for positions. Lowes had pushed into second in the final minute on the second Samsung Honda as he edged out an impressive performance from James Westmoreland on the first of the Buildbase BMWs.

Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison was fourth fastest as the team arrive following a test earlier this week at Cadwell Park with Chris Walker's final run shooting him into the top five on the Quattro Plant Bournemouth Kawasaki.

Ryuichi Kiyonari on the second of the Samsung Hondas had a steady start to the session but maintained sixth position to edge out Josh Brookes on the Tyco Suzuki, his team-mate PJ Jacobsen was unable to complete a lap due to a technical issue however they are set to be back out on track for free practice two.

Jakub Smrz was back inside the top ten in eighth on the Padgetts Honda with Jon Kirkham and Lloyds British GBmoto Honda's Dan Linfoot completing the top ten.

Adult tickets are available to purchase on the gate for all three days, whilst children 12 and under are admitted free. Brands Hatch offers sensational views around the circuit with giant TV screens to ensure you won't miss any of the action, and with excellent weather predicted this weekend it's set to be the biggest event of the season at Brands Hatch.
