Capacity entry confirmed for 2014 BTCC season

Tuesday, December 03 2013

Organisers of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship have announced that they will have a capacity entry of 32 cars for the 2014 season, which will kick off at Brands Hatch on 29/30 March.

Although the definitive entry list is not expected to be announced until March, a new licensing system has been introduced, which should ensure that the number is met. Priority has been given to existing NGTC teams including Honda Racing, who have already unveiled their 2014 challenger.

The NGTC Civic, which has dominated the last two seasons of the BTCC, will be replaced next year by the Civic Tourer estate. When drivers Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden line up on the grid at Brands Hatch next March it will be 20 years since the Volvo 850 competed in the BTCC, the last time a works team entered an estate car.

Civic TourerGordon Shedden said: "It might be a Tourer, but it's still a Civic, the car that has won every championship in BTCC for the last three seasons. I'm really looking forward to the challenge of next season, and to seeing what the Tourer can do on race day."

Matt Neal added: "We're all confident that the car can continue the long-standing success of the Civic in the championship and very much looking forward to putting it through its paces. Although we're racing a new model, the inherent advantages of the Civic hatchback from the past two years remain so there's no reason why this car can't be a winner straight out of the box! We'll be testing the car early in the new year and I can't wait to see it on track."

UAMeanwhile GT squad United Autosports has been granted two licences and will be fielding a pair of Toyota Avensis. One of the cars will be driven by James Cole, who completed a part-season for Team HARD. in 2013. Meanwhile team regular Glynn Geddie will be piloting the second entry. The Scotsman won the European Supercar Challenge Championship with United Autosports and has previously raced in the BTCC-supporting Porsche Carrera Cup GB.

"The British Touring Car Championship is the most popular motor racing series in Great Britain outside of Formula 1," said Zak Brown, Team Owner. "It's seriously competitive, the racing is exciting and it's commercially viable, as the capacity grids show. I'm thrilled that United Autosports are going to be part of the BTCC as well as continuing our strong presence in the British GT Championship."
